Birmingham Police are working on a part-time pilot program to strengthen event staffing

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (WBRC) – Birmingham Police are working on a part-time program to give their officers a break and provide officers from other cities with an opportunity to earn extra money.

Birmingham police believe the part-time program could start the change. Earlier this year, a local leader of the Fraternal Order of Police said they were begging people to come to work. One complaint we’ve heard often is the sheer number of events taking place in the city that are demanding a lot of the law enforcement community.

“In a city that is growing and vibrant, there is an additional need for officers to be on duty at events like this, so we want to create an opportunity to relieve some of our officers of overtime and give others the opportunity to help as well,” said Rodarius Mauldin, Birmingham Police Deputy Chief of Administration.

Deputy Chief Mauldin says the program would not only give officers more time with their families, but would also further ensure their safety at various events in the Magic City.

“In terms of events, we have a lot of family-friendly events and we want to make sure that everyone who comes to live, work and play in the city of Birmingham is safe.”

As for when BPD plans to implement the part-time program, Vice Chief Mauldin says they will begin in the next few months.

“We would like to launch the program as a pilot project at the end of this year, but plan to launch it fully in early 2025.”

As soon as we know more about the program schedule, we will keep you updated live and online.
