BPD brings civilians into the house to put more police on the streets

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Birmingham Police are coming up with creative ideas to put more officers in your community to enforce the law.

Currently, the BPD is still receiving a $5,000 welcome bonus as 18 new police recruits graduate from the academy next Friday, but department leaders are still exploring what else they could do to get more officers back on the streets.

“We have looked closely at how we can get our officers back into the field,” said Rodarius Mauldin, deputy chief of administration for the Birmingham Police Department.

They found that there are many departments that employ civilians in the police departments. Currently, civilians work at BPD as administrative assistants, security officers, clerks, parking attendants and Specialists from the Real Time Crime Center to name a few. For Deputy Chief Mauldin, however, it’s not just about hiring more personnel, but also about bringing people with experience in these areas into the BPD.

“On the one hand, we want to make sure that we have the right people in the right places and in the right positions and that they have the right expertise.”

Deputy Chief Mauldin says there are more civilians working for the department now than ever before and there is still an opportunity to join their team.
