Breaking Down: The surprising ending of Part 1, Season 4

warning: This post contains spoilers for Season 4 Part 1 of Emily in Paris.

For most of the previous seasons Emily in Paris revolves around the chaotic love triangle between Emily (Lily Collins) and her friends, the incredibly cool French couple Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) and Camille (Camille Razat). Although Emily and Gabriel confessed their desire to be together in the cliffhanger finale of season three, the revelation that Camille was pregnant with Gabriel’s baby, And that she was secretly in love with the artist Sofia (Melia Kreiling), seemed to put Gabriel and Emily’s feelings for each other on ice.

In Season 4, however, it seems as though each of these friends finally gets what their hearts desire—even if their situations are still closely intertwined. After a dramatic period of retreating from the scene to do some soul-searching, Camille decides to enter into a relationship with Sofia (who moves from Athens to Paris for her) while preparing to co-parent with Gabriel. Emily breaks up with her British boyfriend Alfie to finally enter into a romantic relationship with Gabriel after seasons of romantic tension and secret flirting.

However, the old adage “true love never runs smoothly” seems to constantly be the undoing of these friends and lovers. Sofia and Camille are staying with Gabriel while they look for an apartment – and Gabriel and Emily, whose best friend Mindy (Ashley Park) shares their small studio apartment and bed, have no room to spend time together as a new couple. The unconventional living situation also sheds light on the long history and lack of boundaries between Camille and Gabriel, who explains that they will “always be family,” especially now that a baby is on the way, which is very concerning to Emily and Sofia.

When Sofia and Camille finally get their own apartment – coincidentally in the same building where Emily and Gabriel live – it seems like the answer to the foursome’s anxieties, but instead the group’s true problems are laid bare. During a shopping trip in Les Puces for their new apartment, Sofia breaks up with Camille, telling her that she never intended to move to Paris but is trapped in her feelings for her – and that Camille’s reluctance to leave the city and Gabriel worries her. Sofia returns to Athens and openly invites Camille to come and continue their relationship.

Camille’s post-breakup boredom, exacerbated by Emily and Gabriel’s budding romance, reaches its peak when she goes to the gynecologist and discovers that her pregnancy test was a rare false positive and that her period had been missed due to stress—she had never been pregnant in the first place. In the final episode of Part 1 of Season 4, Camille grieves over both of these losses and decides not to tell Gabriel that she is not pregnant, apparently in an attempt to avoid losing yet another person she cares about.

While Camille’s shocking revelation is hers alone for now, it remains to be seen whether it will remain a secret – or rather, for how long. Part 2 of season 4 will be released on Netflix on September 12th, and time will tell how Camille’s big secret affects her friendships with Emily and Gabriel and her relationship with Sofia.
