Aldi has once again been named the cheapest supermarket in the UK, with an average shopping basket of groceries and other essentials costing an average of £121.06 in March.

However, Lidl is just behind, as the same shopping basket at the discounter would cost £122.95, according to consumer group Which? The difference is less than £2.

The same grocery shopping cost an average of £158.52 at Waitrose, over £37 more than at Aldi.

The same items cost £138.31 at Asda, £139.23 at Tesco (TSCO.L), £143.48 at Sainsbury’s (SBRY.L), £145.19 at Morrisons and £148.18 at Ocado (OCDO.L).

Ele Clark, retail editor at Which?, said: “Our latest monthly analysis has once again shown that Aldi is maintaining its position as the UK’s cheapest supermarket. With food prices continuing to put pressure on household budgets, it’s no surprise that many people are shopping at the discounters to save money. This is particularly understandable given that consumers could save almost £40 by simply switching supermarkets.”

The list of 71 items included branded items such as Dolmio pasta sauce, Heinz baked beans and Hovis bread, as well as supermarket own products such as milk and butter. Special offers were included, but did not include multiple purchases or two-tier pricing for loyalty programs.

According to the British Retail Consortium (BRC) shop price index, food price inflation slowed to its lowest level in two years in March, with food prices rising 3.7 percent year-on-year, up from 5 percent in February.

According to the BRC, although prices for dairy products have fallen, Easter treats are more expensive than in previous years due to the high costs of cocoa and sugar.

Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi UK, said: “We are very proud to continue to be Britain’s cheapest supermarket in 2024. At Aldi, we are committed to cutting prices more than ever in 2024 and this is just part of our commitment to continue supporting our customers. It’s great to see this recognised time and time again by a highly respected consumer advocate like Which?.”
