Browns vs. Seahawks: Deshaun Watson is one of the 3 stars to watch in the season finale

One more game. Until the season opener. The Cleveland Browns travel to the Pacific Northwest to play their final game against the Seattle Seahawks. Even though the game has no special significance, it is important in some ways. For the core players, it is basically their dress rehearsal to prepare for the regular season. For players who are still on the fence, it is their last chance to prove they belong on the 53-man roster.

Let’s discuss the three things to look out for in this season finale.

All eyes on #4 (Deshaun Watson)

Quarterback Deshaun Watson has not played all of preseason, primarily because he is recovering from offseason surgery. Head coach Kevin Stefanski has already stated that Watson will play in the final preseason game, but the question is, for how long?

Given the issues on the offensive line (especially at tackle), Stefanski will likely be cautious in his play selection. As for the quarterback, what will Watson look like in a live game situation?

From the reports I read after Berea, Watson had a decent training camp. He seems to be comfortable and had some brilliant moments during camp.

Will the chemistry and the game be transferable? We’ll see.

All eyes on the offensive line (especially the tackle spots)

Throughout training camp (and parts of the preseason), the offensive line has been the main topic of conversation. It’s hard to judge the offensive line as a whole considering the majority of the starters didn’t play in the preseason (whether due to injury or playing it safe), but the tackle positions on both sides have been disappointing.

Whether it’s due to injuries or subpar play, the depth of the offensive tackles is a concern.

Seattle will likely have its starting lineup play more than one series, but their first seven have performed well so far (even though it is the preseason). How will the tackles perform in pass protection and run blocking? As for the line last week, it looked better from an operational standpoint than the week before. Expect to explore options for offensive tackle depth once cut-down day arrives.

Will the bubble burst for players on the squad bubble?

The third preseason game is usually a last chance for the underdogs to earn a spot on the 53-man roster, with players like defensive tackle Siaki Ika, wide receiver Michael Woods, defensive tackle Chris Williams and running back Pierre Strong (before his injury) battling for a spot.

When a player on the verge of being drafted plays deep in the second half of a preseason game, it’s usually not a good sign. However, if the player is cut from the roster, it doesn’t mean his football career is completely over.

The player could be signed to the practice squad, signed by another team, or take his talents north to the Canadian Football League or prepare for spring league play in the UFL. Will the players on the reserve list do enough to earn their spot on the 53-man roster?

We will find out on Saturday evening.
