Hotdog! Bruce Springsteen stopped by Max’s Bar and Grill in Long Branch on Saturday, August 10, and picked up five dozen hot dogs.

“He came by today to bring them to an event he was going to,” said Mary Kate Schiller, bar manager at Max’s. “He bought them to cook at an event, so we gave him the hot dogs, sauerkraut, relish and buns.”

Springsteen, who lives in Colts Neck, recently returned to the U.S. after touring Europe with the E Street Band. The Boss made a surprise appearance with Zach Bryan for two songs at the country star’s Aug. 7 show at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

Springsteen and the E Street Band begin their U.S. and Canadian tour on Thursday, August 15, at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh. Upcoming shows include a headlining appearance at the Sea Hear Now Festival on Sunday, September 15, at the beach in Asbury Park.

Schiller cannot make it to the Sea Hear Now show as she is getting married this weekend.

As for hot dogs, Springsteen is a fan of the Jersey Shore variety. The Boss brought up the subject in April 2020 during an episode of his DJ show “From His Home to Yours” on SiriusXM’s E Street Radio, which took place during the coronavirus outbreak.

“What do you miss? I miss going to Max’s and the Windmill and getting a hot dog,” Springsteen said. “I miss walking the boardwalk and the boardwalk in Asbury Park. I miss sitting at the bar and having a few beers and drinks with some friends.”

Max’s has been serving hot dogs in Long Branch since 1928. Springsteen isn’t their only famous fan. Frank Sinatra, who spent summers in Long Branch, was also a customer.

When Springsteen and a friend stopped by on Saturday afternoon, the place was quiet and Schiller was the only one there who recognized the rock’n’roll legend.

“We’re happy to see him at Max’s and can’t wait to see him again,” Schiller said of Springsteen, who took a photo with the boss. “We hope he has a great summer and enjoys his hot dogs.”
