Brushes in motion at the Prairie Arts Center

NORTH PLATTE, Nebraska (KNOP) – Several people marveled at the art before their eyes. On Saturday, the Prairie Arts Center hosted an Art Affair event honoring artists and their artwork.

The parking lot was filled with food and drink vendors, and the building was teeming with artist vendors. Visitors could also participate in a silent auction.

The event also included an amateur painting contest. Artists started with a blank canvas and put their artistic skills to the test. Each artist had to paint a live model within an hour. Participants included the mayor, sheriff and other well-known North Platte figures. For some of the participants, the event was a surprise.

“Moving the model was a little bit of a challenge,” said Mayor Brandon Kelliher. “However, I think the biggest challenge for me is that I don’t have a lot of artistic talent, so I just had to try and figure it out. That said, I’m grateful that the model came to me and showed me how to make this beautiful little tree here, which is definitely a tribute to Bob Ross.”

Kelliher also thanked the Prairie Arts Center.

“Having this event today is a lot of fun,” Kelliher said. “A lot of volunteers from the community came out here and they all showed off their artistic skills, so that’s what we call it. I had a lot of fun today and I’m thankful that the Prairie Arts Center organized this event.”

If you missed Saturday’s action, the canvases will be on display at the Prairie Arts Center all month long.
