HONOLULU – To protect citizens from gun violence and ensure community safety, the state Department of Justice is hosting a gun buyback event on Aug. 24.
The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the lower parking lot of Aloha Stadium. You enter the parking lot from Salt Lake Boulevard near the intersection of Salt Lake Boulevard and Kahuapaani Street.
Individuals are asked to place unloaded firearms in a container or box and place it in the trunk. After arriving at the event, remain in your vehicle while staff retrieves the box from the trunk. Police officials said they will not accept ammunition.
Anyone who surrenders firearms will receive a gift card from Foodland:
- $200 Foodland Gift Card for any automatic or semi-automatic rifle and ghost gun
- $100 Foodland Gift Card for Handguns, Rifles, Shotguns, Bump Stocks and Glock Switches
Functional and non-functioning firearms are accepted, however not working There is no eligibility for a gift card for firearms. Any number of firearms may be surrendered, but individuals may receive a maximum of three gift cards.
Free gun locks are available for those who do not want to hand in a weapon but still want to secure their firearms.
The buyback is an amnesty program. Law enforcement will not ask for identification or questions.
“Many people in the community are faced with the question of what to do with a firearm at home that they no longer want or need,” said Jared Redulla, deputy director of the Department of Law Enforcement, in a press release. “The DLE’s gun buyback program is a practical way to safely turn in firearms that people in the community no longer want to keep.”
Future gun buybacks are being discussed and dates and locations will be determined later.
Licensed firearms dealers and current/former law enforcement officers are not eligible to participate. Officers on site reserve the right to refuse to accept firearms or issue gift cards.
