Buyers take advantage of Maryland’s tax-free week

BALTIMORE – If you’re looking to get some shopping done for the new school year, this week might be the best time to go shopping at the outlets.

“I wish the tax-free week was more than once a year. That would be great,” said Jennifer Hudak, who was shopping for her seven-year-old daughter on Monday afternoon.

Hudak is a mother of four children. Her daughter Addie is preparing for second grade.

“Every little thing helps. It might not help with a single purchase, but over the course of the week it can save us a lot of money,” says Hudak.

Tax-Free Week for Shop Maryland takes place every year in the second week of August.

Even though it costs the state a lot of money, it is a great benefit to the community.

“The state lost $6.5 million in revenue as a result. But that $6.5 million remains in Marylanders’ bank accounts and wallets for them to save or spend on other necessary items,” said Brooke Lierman, Maryland State Auditor.

This is a great help for Michael Burger, who was buying school supplies for his daughter for the first time.

“My daughter has never been to school, so we have no cash or supplies left to fall back on. We have to buy a lot,” says Burger.

The tax-free week runs until midnight, August 17th.
