Byron Center returns in 2024 with key players

BYRON CENTER, Mich. — After finishing last season with a 10-2 record, the Byron Center football team has high expectations for this year. Its last loss came in the regional finals against East Lansing after leading 14-7 at halftime. The seniors on this year’s team say they often think about that game and how it could have gone very differently.

“We were pretty good last year, but we had two slip-ups that cost us a lot. Especially in the game against East Lansing. That’s what we’re going to focus on this year: We don’t want to rush things and take the game as seriously as possible,” said Landon Tungate, the Bulldogs’ quarterback.

Although some core players have graduated, several key offensive players are returning who played together for many years. Isaac Lee is a veteran receiver who has played for Byron Center the last three seasons and is looking to make another deep playoff run with guys he knows very well.

“We grew up playing with and against each other, and we’re losing some key players on defense, but I think with all of our returning players at the skill positions, we’ll be fine. And that’s what we’ve been working toward our whole childhood, to be able to play together on those Friday nights as seniors. And hopefully we can get as far as we did last year or even further,” Lee said.

Head coach Marc Cisco has led the program since 2009 and has a 103-49 record with the Bulldogs. The season opens on Thursday, August 29th on the road at Battle Creek Central.
