California to get support for digital IDs in Wallet app “in the coming weeks” – Appleosophy

Apple today announced that California residents will soon be able to add their ID and driver’s license to the Wallet app on iPhone.

Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, said it was great that Apple was offering something like this to Californians.

“We’re excited to partner with the State of California to bring IDs in Apple Wallet to Apple’s home state soon, giving residents a simple, secure and confidential way to present their California driver’s license and ID card in person and in the app using Apple Wallet,” she said. “Whether you’re using IDs in Apple Wallet to quickly travel around the world or to securely verify age or identity at businesses, California driver’s licenses and ID cards in Apple Wallet make ID presentation seamless – all with the security built into iPhone and Apple Watch.”

Once added to the Wallet app, users will be able to access their California ID or driver’s license directly from their iPhone or Apple Watch. Additionally, they will be able to “show their ID in person at select TSA security checkpoints and businesses, as well as in select apps, to verify their age or identity.”

We’ve covered this topic before, too. Additionally, there have been talks about residents of Iowa and Tennessee being able to add their state IDs and driver’s licenses to the Wallet app as well, but there’s no official announcement from Apple or any of these states about a specific launch yet.

Other states that currently support this include Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Maryland and Ohio.

What do you think about Californians getting support for it in the Wallet app soon? Comment below or let us know on X at @appleosophy.
