Cape Girardeau PD: Man robs bank to get medical care | News

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Missouri – A Springfield man was arrested Tuesday after a robbery call at a local bank branch, Cape Girardeau City Police said Thursday.

According to a department news release, officers arrived at the Southern Bank at 380 North Kingshighway at about 12:06 p.m. They found Richard Bann, 72, of Springfield, sitting on a walker near the front door. Bann allegedly told the officer he was expecting him and that he had just robbed the bank and gave him an envelope containing a $20 bill. Bann told the officer he wanted to go to jail to get medical attention, according to the department.

Witnesses inside the bank told officers that Bann came in and announced he was going to rob the bank. He told the witness to put money in an envelope, but he allegedly did not specify how much. The witness put the $20 in the envelope and gave it to Bann. Bann then left the bank and waited outside for officers to arrive.

The press release states that Bann did not show any weapons and that officers did not find any.

The Cape Girardeau County District Attorney’s Office charged Bann with theft, a Class B felony. He is being held on $50,000 cash bail.

The ministry reminded the public that an indictment is an accusation and that defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
