“Celebration of All Things S-cuk Son” honors over 249 years of Tucson history

The 249th celebration of All Things S-cuk Son/Tucson will be held Saturday evening at the Presidio Museum downtown.

The event, organized by the Tucson-Pima Historical Commission, recognizes the anniversary of the founding of modern Tucson, when the Spanish built a fort near the Santa Cruz River in 1775.

Mariachi Estrella Juvenil will take the stage at 6 p.m. Following the performance, there will be a welcome and blessing at 6:45 p.m. The deer dancers Kolencia Oficio Achalim Pascua Yaqui will perform at 7 p.m.

Due to Yaqui customs, participants are not allowed to photograph or record the dancers.

The program continues at 8 p.m. with the Food Heroes Awards, followed by a special announcement from the Buffalo Soldiers: Southern Arizona Chapter. There will be a musket demonstration by the Presidio Garrison at 8:30 p.m. and live music by Kevin Pakulis and Friends at 8:45 p.m.

Free eegees will be available on site, as well as tacos and fried bread for sale. In addition, over 20 local clubs and organizations will be present, including the Old Pascua Museum, Yaqui Cultural Center, Fort Lowell Cavalry and more.

Tucson’s “birthday” – the day recognized as Founder’s Day – is August 20. On this day in 1775, the site of the Presidio of San Agustín del Tucson was chosen by a detachment of Spanish troops led by Don Hugo O’Conor, an Irish-born Spanish soldier who was military governor of northern Mexico.

The 249th Celebration of All Things S-cuk Son/Tucson is a free, family-friendly event and will be held Saturday, August 17, from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Presidio San Agustin del Tucson Museum, 196 N. Court Ave.
