Celebration of the 30th anniversary of “The Shawshank Redemption”

MANSFIELD, Ohio — Few films leave as strong an impression as “The Shawshank Redemption.”

The film celebrates its 30th anniversary.th anniversary. The city of Mansfield, Ohio, where most of the film was shot, is hosting special events throughout the weekend to celebrate.

The town of Mansfield goes out of its way to include appearances by some of its most loved and hated characters.

Keith and Andrea Eberhardt traveled from Florida to be part of the action.

“I’m looking forward to the casting meeting,” said Andrea.

In addition to discussions, several cast members will explore the Shawshank Trail, which includes 15 filming locations.

“We have Clancy Brown here. He was Captain Hadley in the movie,” said Jodie Snavely, special projects director for Destination Mansfield – Richland County. “He’s coming back for this anniversary. It’s the first time he’s been back. He’s originally from Ohio.”

“It will be a great photo opportunity. They will be wearing the costumes they wore in the film,” Snavely said.

The film premiered in downtown Mansfield in 1994. Just two miles down the road is the famous Ohio State Reformatory, or Shawshank State Prison, as it is called in the film.

Chris Gilliam visited with his family and is quite the superfan, having seen the film more than 50 times.

The geologist’s hammer used in the film will be unveiled on site. It will be displayed directly in front of Warden Norton’s office.
