You may be able to get a castle in Scotland for well under a million pounds, but depending on the castle you choose, it may require extensive restoration work.

Pieteadie Castle
A 3.8-acre castle in Fife, Scotland, with an orchard, paddock and tennis court, is for sale for £225,000 ($300,558).
However, Piteadie Castle is described as a ruin, although it has “restoration potential” according to estate agent Savills, who have included the property in their listing.
It probably dates from the late 15th century and was partially rebuilt in the 17th century and extended with a stair tower.

Fetteresso Castle
Next on the list is a 14th-century castle west of the fishing village of Stonehaven. It is for sale for £475,000 and, unlike Piteadie, is in superb condition.
Fetteresso Castle was rebuilt in 2005 and “modernised to provide beautifully appointed residential accommodation”, according to its Zoopla listing.
Its features include an “elegant staircase with high ceilings and special lighting” and “a spacious formal living area with contemporary details and an open fireplace.”

Fa’side Castle
Fa’side Castle in East Lothian is also one of the cheaper options if you want to own a castle, although you will have to spend over a million pounds to do so, as Savills will accept offers over 1.7 million pounds.
But you definitely get what you pay for. The description describes Fa’side as “an outstanding historic 14th century castle with panoramic views over the Lothians and the Forth Estuary.”
Among its special features is the “Great Hall”, “a classic feature of a castle of this period”.

“This magnificent old room features an original stone fireplace with wood burning stove. Next to the window are stone window sills set into the thick castle walls,” the listing says.
In the castle grounds there is a 17th-century barn which was converted into two cottages, Woodside and Gateside, in 1996.

Brechin Castle
Finally, for a whopping £3 million, still at the lower end of the castle price scale, you can buy Brechin Castle. It has eight reception rooms, 16 bedrooms, 10 bathrooms and five cottages.
“Set on the site of a much older fortress of the Scottish kings, the current house was last reconstructed in the early 18th century and incorporates parts of the original 13th century castle,” Savills’ listing said.
