Levi Colwill believes Chelsea need to continue to work hard and be patient after their defeat to Manchester City last weekend.
The Blues started the Enzo Maresca era with a 2-0 defeat to the defending champions and were punished for some defensive errors.
However, there were positive signs that the players were making progress towards the Italian’s style of play and Chelsea were by no means inferior.
Colwill demands patience and hard work
The Blues went into their opening game of the season after a mixed pre-season, but did well at Stamford Bridge.
Colwill, who is just beginning his second season as a senior player at the club, has formed Maresca’s current preferred partnership with Wesley Fofana at the heart of Chelsea’s defence.
The duo could have done better on both goals but seemed to cope well with the threat posed by City, which bodes well for the future considering how vulnerable the Blues have looked defensively in pre-season.
After the loss to City, Colwill felt there was a lot of positive to report and that the team just needed to be patient and keep working hard.
“There are definitely a lot of positives to take away,” he told Chelsea’s website.
“There were moments when we showed how good we are. We had a lot of chances and if we had taken advantage of them on another day, the result would have been different. I’m sure of that. At times we held our own against the champions, currently the best in the world.

“You could see how we came together in certain areas. When we played our game, even against the best team in the world, we played through them well and created chances. So we’re definitely on our way there. We just have to be patient and keep working hard.”
Next up for Colwill and his teammates is the first leg of the Europa Conference League play-offs against Servette on Thursday, before travelling to Wolves on Sunday.
