Chillicothe launches Phase II of sidewalk repair program and offers property owners a cost share

CHILLICOT, Ohio — The City of Chillicothe has initiated Phase II of its Sidewalk Repair Program, a project to improve pedestrian walkways throughout the city. The program highlights the importance of sidewalks for safe access to schools, businesses and community events while ensuring clear separation between pedestrians and vehicular traffic.

According to Chillicothe Codified Ordinance 903.01, property owners are responsible for maintaining sidewalks, curbs and gutters adjacent to their properties. To assist them with this responsibility, the Sidewalk Repair Program offers financial assistance, with the City covering 50% of sidewalk repair costs up to $1,000 and 50% of the total sidewalk, curb and gutter repair costs up to $2,000.

The application deadline is September 20, 2024. Project approvals are expected by September 27, 2024. Preference will be given to projects where the repairs are necessary. The City requires that all work be performed by private, licensed contractors registered with the Chillicothe Building Department. Property owners are encouraged to obtain multiple estimates to ensure competitive pricing. Repairs must meet the City’s standard specifications as outlined in Sections 608 and 609 of the Ohio Department of Transportation Construction and Materials Specifications.

Property owners are also responsible for the removal of trees in connection with curb or sidewalk repairs. Both tree removal and replacement require coordination with the Tree Commission.

Further details, including application forms and a list of registered contractors, can be found on the City of Chillicothe website.
