Christopher Owens, the former frontman of the popular indie rock band Girls, has announced his new solo album I want to walk barefoot through your hairwill be released on October 18th via True Panther Records (Girls, King Krule, Grace Ives). The announcement is accompanied by the new single “No Good,” along with a live acoustic performance video directed by filmmaker Rebekah Sherman-Myntti.
Loss and hardship are nothing new for Christopher Owens—in the years since his last release (2017’s Vante by Curls), he’s experienced a motorcycle accident that left him immobile, struggled with homelessness, and the death of his former Girls bandmate Chet “JR” White just as the duo were preparing to reunite in the studio. An album that captures both the lows of life and the celebration of its highs, I Wanna Run Barefoot Through Your Hair is one that Owens describes as “a record about a journey back to the inside of myself.” While Owens underscores his continued influence as a songwriter, he openly shares a renewed sense of purpose with his guitar. Owens co-produced the album in various San Francisco studios with longtime collaborator Doug Boehm (Girls, French Kicks, Twin Peaks), and all album photography was shot by longtime collaborator Sandy Kim.
Owens says of the themes and experiences that led to the album’s creation: “In the second half of the Bible, Jesus asks, ‘What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world, but loses his soul?’ Lately, I’ve found it interesting to ask that question in a different way. ‘What does it profit a man if he loses his whole world, but gains his soul?’ And I think the answer would have to be something like, ‘The kingdom of heaven.'”
