The Birmingham City Council on Tuesday approved an agreement with the Birmingham Board of Education to share video recordings from school premises. This includes cameras in public areas of the school, such as foyers, on the outside of buildings and in sports facilities.

“These feeds are shared in real time with the Birmingham Police Department,” said City Council Member Hunter Williams. “The safety of our students is our highest priority.”

The school cameras complement the city’s ever-growing camera network.

“School security is already often deployed at sporting events or other large events, but when an emergency occurs, having these camera feeds available to police can save lives,” Williams said.

“They will be able to tell emergency responders exactly where to go, whether it’s a medical emergency or something else.”

The city council also voted to purchase three additional mobile camera units that can be deployed at hotspots throughout the city, particularly to monitor demonstration drives.

“These cameras are used at large events and gatherings and serve as the eyes of law enforcement,” Williams said.

“We also want to use these devices outside of large events to prevent criminal activity in certain areas. As you know, the city can now use cameras to track those who participate in illegal street racing, and this is another tool for the city to help curb this.”
