City of Birmingham receives more than million for Real Time Crime Center

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (WBRC) – The City of Birmingham’s Real Time Crime Center (RTCC) recently received $4.2 million in funding through the federal government’s Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2024.

Republican U.S. Senator Katie Britt of Alabama, a member of the Senate Budget Committee, recommended the funding allocation for the city.

The City of Birmingham plans to use the funds to purchase additional cameras and install them in high-crime areas. The RTCC will use the cameras to assist local and state law enforcement officers and enable them to respond more quickly to ongoing or recent crimes.

“This $4.2 million grant puts Alabama citizens’ hard-earned tax dollars back home to support local law enforcement and public safety in Birmingham,” said Senator Britt. “I am proud to have secured these funds during the 2024 budget process, and I look forward to continuing to work on the committee to make further investments in our state and our communities.”

“We are grateful to Senator Katie Britt for supporting our city with these funds,” said Birmingham Mayor Randall L. Woodfin. “We work every day to keep our community safe. We use every tool possible, including conflict resolution classes in all of our schools, partnerships with reintegration support organizations, and the development of hospital-based violence interventions. This support of the Real Time Crime Center – where we combine innovation with traditional policing tools – will expand the vision and reach of our officers and provide faster response times. It takes a community to fight crime, and we are grateful that Senator Britt is part of that community working to make Birmingham a safer place.”
