Closures of local centers due to renovations lead to increased crowds at the Rose Park Activity Center

The Cesar Chavez and GV Daniels recreation centers will be closed for renovations. The Rose Park Activity Center is one of two centers still open.

“It’s going to get pretty busy here every day,” said Rose Park visitor Ron Ashmore. “I think it’ll be OK for a while. I’m glad the city is making progress and putting new facilities in place there.”

Ashmore said crowds were not expected to appear at all times of the day.

“You know, during lunchtime there will just be a little bit more crowding, but the staff are excellent and manage to get people through, so it will probably only be a difference of a few minutes,” Ashmore said.

Shirley Phillips used to go to GV Daniels and now has to go to Rose Park Activity Center. She says her commute time doesn’t change all that much.

“A few miles, a few miles, not very much, I’ll have to get used to it,” said Rose Park visitor Shirley Phillips. “I’ve been here a few times, but I like the service here.”

Rose Park visitor Elodia Ysa has been visiting Rose Park since her husband died and says she enjoys the company.

“I really enjoyed it,” said Ysa. “You get to meet a lot of people, talk to them, and feel better when you go home. I spent about an hour or an hour and a half here, talking to and visiting people I hadn’t seen before.”

Ysa says that although demand will increase, she, like many others, depends on these centers.
