Coleen Rooney makes important decision as her husband Wayne Rooney takes up his job at Plymouth in championship opener

Wayne Rooney takes over his first competitive game for Plymouth today.

Coleen Rooney has made a big decision as her husband Wayne Rooney begins his tenure at Plymouth Argyle ahead of the opening game of the Championship.

Rooney, who was appointed head coach of Plymouth in May, will take up his duties at Sheffield Wednesday later today.

This is his first managerial role since being sacked by Birmingham City earlier this year after a disappointing tenure of less than three months.

And before the game starts in Plymouth, neither his wife Coleen nor his sons will accompany the Manchester United and England legends in the southwest.

According to the Daily Mail, Coleen will not follow her husband to Plymouth but will instead stay in Cheshire with her four sons.

Rooney, who has also coached Derby County and DC United, admitted his “hunger” to return to management was “huge” and jumped at the chance at Plymouth.

“I had a short break, maybe a week or so, before I took over management of DC United and then I had 48 hours before I went to Birmingham City. I had a couple of months before I came here. It was good. I was able to reflect on everything I’ve been through as a coach,” he explained.

“I looked at what I did well and what I didn’t do so well. I had the chance to get personal feedback and talked to a lot of different people in the game. That time was really helpful, but the hunger to get back into it was huge.”

The 38-year-old added: “I’m not someone who can sit at home. I have four young children, but I have a desire to be great. I had a really good playing career. I know a lot of former players who were at the top but aren’t ready to venture out there. That’s not me.”

“I want to be a role model for my children and my players. I want to play football. This is what I know and love. Hopefully I can put a smile on the faces of many fans here.”

Plymouth avoided relegation from the Championship last season and Rooney is tasked with improving the Pilgrims this season after replacing Ian Foster.
