I am honored and privileged to help build that foundation and ensure our work has a positive impact on future generations.”

Cummins has over 30 years of experience with Columbia Fire & Rescue. He began his career with the department in 1990 as a firefighter and rose through the ranks, serving as fire chief/operator, captain, assistant fire chief, and finally assistant fire chief before retiring in May 2021. Additionally, Cummins served a total of over 20 years as a volunteer firefighter in Maury and Lawrence Counties. Following his retirement, Cummins was rehired part-time in August 2021, where he was instrumental in facilitating the transition from FEMA to TEMA, conducting training, securing grants, and implementing hazard mitigation strategies.

In March 2024, he was appointed interim CEO.

Mayor Chaz Molder stated, “We are pleased that Chris Cummins has permanently continued his outstanding service to our community in his role as Chief of Columbia Fire & Rescue. The improved morale and improvements in other metrics during his time as interim chief are a result of his leadership and the respect he enjoys within the department and beyond. His experience and commitment to public safety make him the ideal leader of Columbia Fire & Rescue.”

As full-time fire chief, Cummins will oversee all aspects of Columbia Fire & Rescue, including emergency response, training programs and community outreach initiatives. He will work closely with city officials and department staff to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents and visitors.

City Manager Tony Massey said, “I am pleased to announce that Chris Cummins has been named the permanent Fire Chief for the City of Columbia. He has done an excellent job in his role as interim chief. He brings experience, integrity and commitment to the position. He will successfully lead the department into the future.”

Throughout his career, Cummins has demonstrated exceptional leadership skills and a strong ability to effectively manage crisis situations. The City of Columbia is confident that he will lead the department with integrity, skill and a deep commitment to the community as he begins his new role as full-time Fire Chief.
