Community Medical Center receives renewed accreditation as a center of excellence for robot-assisted surgery

Community Medical Center (CMC), a RWJBarnabas Health hospital, was recently re-accredited as a Robotic Surgery Center of Excellence by the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC). This accreditation recognizes CMC’s commitment and high standards in providing quality patient care and safety. Accredited Center of Excellence status means CMC meets nationally and internationally recognized standards. Not all hospitals and surgeons seek accreditation; not all who undergo the rigorous inspection process receive accreditation. CMC was the third hospital in New Jersey to receive this accreditation and has held it since 2018.

Community Medical Center’s robotic surgery program was the first of its kind in the region and is operated by highly skilled surgeons with over a decade of experience in robotic surgery procedures. Surgeons use robotic surgery for gynecologic, gynecologic/oncologic, urologic, general, colorectal and orthopedic surgical procedures. CMC’s robotic surgery program includes two daVinci robotic surgery programs, including the latest generation da Vinci Xi and the Mako robotic arm-assisted system for joint replacement surgery. The hospital’s rectal cancer program is also accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Rectal Cancer, a quality program of the American College of Surgeons.

“We believe our patients don’t have to travel far from home to receive world-class care, which is why we have worked tirelessly to bring and expand cutting-edge services and technology to the greater Ocean County area,” said Patrick Ahearn, Chief Executive Officer. “Our patients benefit from our talented and experienced team of surgeons specializing in robotic surgery and receive world-class, high-quality care from our skilled staff. I am proud of our surgeons and clinical and support staff and of this achievement that validates their efforts.”

Healthcare facilities and surgeons seeking SRC accreditation undergo a comprehensive assessment and inspection process to ensure the applicant meets the SRC’s established standards and requirements. These requirements include surgical volume, facility equipment, clinical treatment workflows and standard operating procedures, a focus on patient education and continuous quality assessment. Inspectors train staff in accredited departments on best practices to help an organization improve its care and services.

“We are proud to recognize Community Medical Center for its commitment to advancing and providing high-quality care to all patients,” said Gary M. Pratt, CEO of SRC. “This accreditation demonstrates that this facility is among the best in its field and is committed to providing the highest quality care possible.”
