Community program offers citizens affordable solar modules

A program that allows people to invest in solar energy to reduce their energy costs has been extended.

Wiltshire Council and Swindon Borough Council, in partnership with iChoosr, have extended the registration deadline for the Solar Together scheme until 13 September.

The program uses group purchasing to get cheaper solar panels and installation costs from verified suppliers. So far, more than 3,700 residents have signed up.

Dominic Muns, Wiltshire Council Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “It is fantastic to see how many residents and businesses have expressed their interest in Solar Together.”

“A real turning point”

The initiative offers solar panels on roofs with optional battery storage and charging stations for electric vehicles.

Mr Muns added: “There is no obligation to accept the offer made after the registration period has expired, so I would encourage anyone thinking about solar panels to register.”

“Solar Together is a game changer for solar panel technology in Wiltshire. It offers residents and commercial building owners the opportunity to have solar panels installed easily and at lower prices by trusted suppliers, with the support they need to make the most of their green investment.”

This is the third Solar Together programme the council has run with iChoosr. Previous programmes have seen 1,110 systems installed, totalling over 10,660 solar panels, resulting in over £11 million being invested by residents in the green economy.

To register for the program, residents must either own a home or have permission from their landlord to install solar panels.

Small and medium-sized enterprises and homeowners associations that meet these requirements can also participate.
