Coney Island Cyclone needs repairs before it can reopen for rides

CONEY ISLAND, Brooklyn (PIX11) – The Coney Island Cyclone at Luna Park remained out of service Monday and will need to be repaired before it can reopen for rides, authorities said.

According to the New York City Department of Public Works, operators shut down the legendary roller coaster in Brooklyn on Thursday due to a crack in the sprocket in the ride’s machine room.

Several people were escorted off the roller coaster after operators stopped the ride. No injuries were reported.

The Cyclone will remain out of service until park operators make repairs to the attraction’s machine room and Department of Buildings inspectors conduct another inspection to confirm the attraction is safe to reopen.

The Building Authority has imposed two administrative offenses on the owners of Luna Park for failing to maintain the attraction due to the crack in the sprocket and for failing to report the incident promptly to the Building Authority.
