Connecticut State Police launches measures to combat credit card skimmers

Connecticut State Police have noticed an increase in theft of credit card information over the past six months.

Police said they have found card readers at gas stations, ATMs and store checkouts. They said they are concerned about keeping up with new technology being developed to steal card information.

According to Connecticut State Police Sergeant Luke Davis, criminals place foil on card readers to collect information when people insert or swipe their cards. After a period of time, they return to collect the foil. He urges consumers to examine PIN pads before using them.

“If you notice anything suspicious, do not risk your personal information. Notify a company representative and contact your local or state police immediately,” Davis said.

Police said they are working with retailers to detect and investigate these skimmers before the criminals come back and collect them. Retailers have been encouraged to include a unique sticker on their card readers so customers can verify their authenticity. Davis said that for now, it is safer to tap the card on a card reader rather than inserting or swiping it.

Governor Ned Lamont announced a statewide initiative to combat card skimmers. Lamont said multiple agencies are working together to investigate these crimes and prevent them from happening again.

“Crime never sleeps, and neither do we. Technology is changing rapidly, and criminals are becoming more sophisticated, and we are stopping them,” Lamont said.

According to police, SNAP benefit cards are also being targeted. The social welfare office is trying to reimburse the victims for their benefits.
