Construction begins on new recreation center in West Huntsville

The official groundbreaking for the future West Huntsville Recreation Center marks the start of a year-long construction project in the city’s Fifth Ward.

The new facility will be located at 150 Martin Road, just west of Zierdt Road, will cover 25,000 square feet and will closely resemble the popular Mark Russell Recreation Center on Taylor Road.

“This is an exciting step forward in our efforts to improve the quality of life in all parts of the city,” said Mayor Tommy Battle. “Although this area has seen significant residential growth, it has been underserved in terms of recreational amenities. That is about to change.”

The recreation center will include a gymnasium with two basketball courts, two volleyball courts and three indoor pickleball courts. In addition, the site will include three outdoor pickleball courts and green space.

Construction work is expected to be completed within a year.

“This center will meet the growing need for recreational opportunities and help build a vibrant, active community,” said 5th District Councilmember John Meredith. “I am deeply grateful to the City Council and my fellow Council members for their commitment and support in making this project a reality.”

Once completed, this new facility will bring the total number of recreation and community centers in Huntsville to 15 and complement the city’s network of over 65 public parks.

James Gossett, director of Parks & Recreation, expressed enthusiasm about the project and called it a significant addition to the city’s recreational offerings.

“More importantly, it is a testament to Huntsville’s commitment to providing accessible, high-quality facilities to all of our residents,” Gossett said. “This center will serve as a dynamic hub for sports, fitness and community events and help create a stronger, more connected community.”
