CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — All five Conviva Care Centers in the Coastal Region have redesigned their locations to help seniors stay cool this summer, which will provide relief at all senior centers during the hot month of August.
“When I was younger, I could tolerate the heat, but not anymore,” said James Edbarb, a senior who has been attending Conviva Care Center near Port Ave. for nearly two years.
His current living conditions changed overnight a few days ago, he lives in his car and the air conditioning doesn’t work.
“Now I’m sleeping in my car. Yesterday I didn’t sleep at all. I didn’t sleep at all. I just sat in the car and looked at the stars,” he said.
Edbarb said he went to the Conviva Care Center to cool off and seek help.

Stephen Johnston, market president of Conviva Centers in Corpus Christi, said the centers are a place to cool off but also a place to have fun.
Johnston said it was important to them to provide seniors with a place to shelter from the heat.
Activity centers have extended their hours of operation for the month of August and are now open until 5 p.m. Not only do they provide seniors with a fun and safe place to hang out, but they also educate them on how to stay safe in the heat.
“There are also tips on how to stay cool and safe in the heat, you know, hydration temperatures. When they’re outside,” Johnston said. “All of those things are available.”
Some, like Juan David Lopez, said he had plenty of water and snacks with him, but even that didn’t help.
“As soon as I get out and walk 10 to 15 feet, I get a headache and can’t go anywhere,” he said.
“The heat has been bothering me for three months,” said Edbarb. “I can’t – I feel sick and nauseous and I’m starting to see stars.”
At Conviva Care Center, they want to make seniors who need to cool down aware that they can turn to the nearest place. The centers offer activities such as movies, tours, educational and fitness classes, and arts and crafts.
