Cori Bush supports Bernie Sanders’ call to ban “big money” from politics: “Talk about it”

Democratic Representative Cori Bush of Missouri supported Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont’s call to ban “big money” from politics at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday.

Senator Sanders told those present at the convention that the United States must ban large donations to candidates. He noted: “Billionaires from both parties should not be able to buy elections, including primaries.”

“Talk about it,” Rep. Bush wrote in response to X, adding two clapping emojis.

The congresswoman lost her district primary earlier this month to St. Louis District Attorney Wesley Bell, who reportedly received more than $8.4 million from the United Democracy Project, a political action committee of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).

Rep. Bush attributed her defeat to AIPAC, an organization that advocates for candidates who support Israel. After the race was called, the congresswoman told the organization she was “coming to tear down your kingdom.”

Her campaign said she opposes funding from corporate and special interest political action committees.

Rep. Bush also urged voters to oppose AIPAC-backed candidates such as George Latimer, New York’s Westchester County executive who defeated Rep. Jamaal Bowman, D-N.Y., in the June primary for New York’s 16th Congressional District. She later accused AIPAC of spending more than $20 million to defeat her Democratic colleague and said in a statement that there should be “no question” that “big money must be kept out of politics.”

That was the staggering price of ousting Jamaal Bowman – a black former middle school principal and influential progressive politician who was unafraid to challenge the status quo and stand up for ordinary, everyday people,” the congresswoman said.

Politico reported in June that the organization was an example of Republicans funding candidates in this year’s Democratic primary. Representative Bush claimed in her statement that “billionaire extremists” are trying to buy elections.

“AIPAC and its allies – supported by the big donors of the far-right Donald Trump – have pumped a flood of money into this primary campaign, showing us how desperate these extremist billionaires are to buy our democracy, exploit their own advantages and silence the voices of progress and justice,” the congresswoman said.
