County government to complete phase 1 of Dell Dale Street sidewalk repair project nearly 2 years after woman’s death in 2022

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — The first phase of the Dell Dale Street sidewalk repair project was completed with a grand opening on Tuesday morning.

Harris County 2nd District Commissioner Adrian Garcia and city leaders were accompanied by the parents of 25-year-old Jacqueline Gonzalez, the woman who died in December 2022 when she was struck by a car as she attempted to cross the 2000 block of Dell Dale Street.

The night Jacqueline Gonzalez was killed, there were no sidewalks or lights.

Nearly two years later, the work of the Revive 2 Thrive project and Harris County Precinct 2 has brought some calm to the neighborhood.

For Jacqueline’s family, the sight of the sidewalk has a special meaning.

“I like it because it looks better for the community. Now it’s safe to walk there,” said Gerardo Gonzalez, Jacqueline’s father.

“I am very honored to have the opportunity to show the Gonzalez family that their daughter’s life and the loss of their daughter was not in vain and that we will always have something to remind us of her,” Garcia said during the grand opening on Tuesday.

Over the next year, traffic lights and better lighting will be installed.
