Chicago Cubs Hall of Fame member Ryne Sandberg announced on 670 the Score Thursday afternoon that he has completed treatment for metastatic prostate cancer and is officially cancer-free.
Sandberg was diagnosed with the disease in January and underwent chemotherapy and other treatments.
Sandberg was emotional as he announced he had received his final treatment early Thursday morning. At 11:30 a.m., two hours before his scheduled radio appearance, his doctor told him that “no cancer had been detected” in his body.
“It’s incredible,” he said. “The doctors, nurses, like I said, the support, it’s been quite a journey. But here it all ended well, so there are tears of joy.”
Sandberg is a legendary figure in Cubs history. The club signed him from the Philadelphia Phillies in January 1982. He won the National League MVP award in 1984 and was a ten-time All-Star, seven-time Silver Slugger winner and nine-time Gold Glove winner during his career.
The Cubs unveiled a statue of Sandberg at Wrigley Field earlier this summer and honored him with a special ceremony hosted by Bob Costas.
