Currently: New school year

Evanston Township Superintendent Marcus Campbell and Principal Taya Kinzie greet the freshmen of the Class of 2028 on the first day of school. “We always look forward to the start of the year,” Campbell said. “We’re welcoming a new class and saying goodbye to our graduating classes.” The freshmen began a few hours before the others to get their bearings. This year marks the centennial of the school building at 1600 Dodge Avenue. It’s the largest in the country under one roof, Campbell said. “We’re going to have a lot of parties.” (Photo by Richard Cahan.)

Thirteen community members gather on the sidewalk in front of Evanston Township High School to pray for the new school year. “The enemy, Satan, is real,” said organizer Patrica McPherson, who recorded the event on her cellphone. “We came here to pray, to protect our families, our children and our administration. We just experienced a shooting here. We are on a battlefield.” Credit: Richard Cahan
