Cyclones draw in first away game

DES MOINES, Iowa – The Cyclones and Bulldogs played out a 1-1 draw in Iowa’s capital on Thursday night.

Iowa State (1-1-1) leaves its first road game of the season with a tie in a game in which it had more shots on goal than its opponent and controlled much of the second half. Drake (0-1-2) failed to earn its first win of the season in its second straight home game.

For the third time in a row, Iowa State struck first. Morgan Furmaniak sent a sliding right-foot shot into the bottom right corner of the net, just past Drake’s goalie. The Cyclones have now scored a goal in the first half in all three games this season. Junior Magdalena Keck With this game she scored her second assist of her career and her first of the season.

Furmaniak is the only Cyclones player besides Keck to have scored multiple points this season, as both have scored two points each in three contests.

Drake attempted to counter a Cyclones attack late in the first period, but ISU defenders were able to knock the ball out of bounds, forcing a throw-in. After the throw-in, Drake’s Zoey Mahoney executed a flip shot and landed the ball perfectly in the players’ attacking zone. After the bounce, Drake’s Maia Bentley sent a left-foot shot into the bottom right corner of the net, tying the game at 1-1.

The two teams went into halftime tied, with each side having four shots on goal. The Cyclones had two saves in the first half, Drake had one, while the Bulldogs had two corner kicks and ISU had just one.

The second half saw the energy increase on both sides as the stanza included four yellow cards, two on each side. Both teams had plenty of chances as both teams surpassed their shot totals from the first half.

In the second half, both teams had their goal that would have put them ahead disallowed due to offside decisions, as the score remained tied.

The game continued to go back and forth as both sides had good chances. When it came down to the final moments of the contest, Iowa State had the advantage with less than a minute to go.

Lee’s shot was the last attempt by either side and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
