Deep Creek Bridge closed for maintenance > Norfolk District > Norfolk District News

CHESAPEAKE, Virginia. — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Norfolk District will close the Deep Creek Bridge for maintenance on Sunday, August 18, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. This closure is necessary to repair minor damage to the 90-year-old bridge’s support beams and to ensure public safety during and after repairs. The bridge will be closed to both water and road traffic.

Thorough bridge inspections are conducted every two years. While the 2022 inspection found no significant structural damage, a recent inspection found accelerated corrosion.

Although this repair is unrelated to the ongoing Deep Creek Bridge replacement project, it is critical to maintaining the functionality of the current bridge until the first two lanes of the new bridge open to the public in 2025.

The USACE coordinates and obtains approval from the U.S. Coast Guard for all closures of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterways in accordance with federal regulations.

The Corps is committed to minimizing disruption, but commuters should expect delays. Normal service is expected to resume the same day repairs are completed.

Traffic impacts are typically displayed in the Chesapeake Travel Advisory Calendar and are communicated via @ChesapeakeRoads on Twitter.
