DeKalb Corn Fest, Sycamore Ribs Fest and more – Shaw Local

1. DeKalb Corn Festival: DeKalb’s biggest summer event returns downtown Friday through Sunday. One of Illinois’ last free music festivals, the 47th annual DeKalb Corn Fest will shut down Lincoln Highway in DeKalb the last weekend of August. Boiled corn, rides, artisans, feasts and more will be joined by headlining band Sugar Ray. For more information, visit cornfest.com.

2. Ribs, Rhythm and Beer Festival: From 5 to 11 p.m. Saturday, crowds gather in downtown Sycamore at the corner of Somonauk and Elm Streets to enjoy hearty ribs, craft beer and live music. For more information, visit sycamorechamber.com.

3. See a performance of the comedy “The Foreigner” by the Stage Coach Players last weekend: Performances run through Sunday, 126 S. Fifth St., DeKalb. “The Foreigner” is directed by Gail Cannata, making her directorial debut with the Stage Coach Players. From a fishing cabin in Georgia, “foreigner” Charlie Baker travels to Georgia with his friend Froggy LeSueur. Charlie wants to be left alone, and Froggy, who must leave the cabin and Charlie to take care of some business, hatches a plan to prevent his friend from being harassed by anyone. 4. Start the football season at the FNBO Challenge: Saturday, August 31, at Northern Illinois University’s Huskie Stadium, 1425 W. Lincoln Highway, DeKalb. Enjoy an exhibition game between rivals DeKalb High School Barbs and Sycamore High School Spartans. A tailgating event will be held prior to the event, with proceeds benefiting each school’s athletic booster clubs. Tailgating begins at 3:30 p.m., followed by the freshmen game at 4 p.m., the athletes’ parade at 6:15 p.m. and kickoff of the varsity game at 7 p.m. For more information, visit fnbochallenge.org.

5. DeKalb Kite Festival: The 19th annual family-friendly event will be held on Sunday, September 8th from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the DeKalb Kiwanis Park on the corner of Fairview and South Fourth Streets. The free event is hosted by the DeKalb Park District and also features food trucks, live music and seasonal activities. Families are welcome to bring their own kite or purchase one at the event while supplies last.
