TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – A nationwide ban on price gouging is one of the proposals in Vice President Kamala Harris’s economic plan if she becomes president.
One woman says the ban proposal is astonishing, while the president and CEO of the Tucson Metro Chamber says it is a diversionary tactic.
“I think the administration is attacking something that isn’t really common in the market,” said Michael Guymon, president and CEO of the Tucson Metro Chamber.
Guymon pointed out that the Biden-Harris administration’s U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) report found that fluctuations in food and grocery prices were more related to supply and demand, the supply chain and even the war in Ukraine.
However, the report did not mention price gouging, said Guymon.
However, one woman believes that the ban would really help people who are in a difficult situation.
“And when prices go up, it hits us people who have a certain budget. So we have to save on our purchases,” says Jessica Molinaubamea, a grocery shopper.
Guymon went on to say that understanding supply and demand is one reason Arizona is one of the few states that does not have anti-price gouging laws.
“I don’t think that exists in Arizona because we understand the fundamentals of supply and demand and economics,” Guymon said. “I would like to see examples of that, and if there are bad actors out there, we want to call them out.”
When it comes to fighting inflation, former President Donald Trump has been very vocal. However, the Trump-Vance campaign website states that they do not support price controls.
“On my first day back in the Oval Office, I will sign an executive order directing every Cabinet Secretary and every agency head to use every tool and authority at their disposal to fight inflation and rapidly reduce consumer prices. We will do this very quickly,” Trump said Wednesday at a rally in North Carolina.
13 News has reached out to the Trump-Vance campaign team for more details on Trump’s economic plan, but has not yet received a response.
