Warner Robins prepares for rival Northside

WARNER ROBINS, Ga. (41NBC/WMGT) – The Warner Robins Demons take to the practice field to prepare for their game against their rivals, the Northside Eagles. The two have faced each other 66 times, with the Demons leading the overall standings 41-25.

Warner Robins has also won its last seven games against the school two miles up the road, including last season when Demons head coach Shane Sams, in his second year as coach, got to try out the rival game for the first time as a coach, defeating the Eagles 39-35.

No one on this team knows this rivalry better than Coach Sams, as he was the Demons’ quarterback under head coach Bryan Way in the mid-2000s.

“It’s one of the biggest rivalries,” coach Sams said at Monday’s practice. “I think it means a lot to the community, the kids and what they do. I mean, it’s a very important rivalry for everybody. It’s special, it’s one of the biggest in the country and the talk of the town. You get it for a year. You get to be the one talking trash for a year, so it’s important.”

Coach Sams talked about what it means to be a coach in this game now after experiencing it as both a former player and head coach. “It’s something special, something you can’t take for granted because you’ll probably never get used to it because it’s always a special moment to coach the big game and not a lot of people get that opportunity. Some of the coaches that have come with me and stuff, I always tell what it’s like and after the game they say, ‘Coach, there’s nothing like it,’ so it’s definitely special to be a part of it.”

Sams also talked about what his Demons team needs to do this Friday to win a game that will be a win-win. “We have to play a perfect football game. They’re a really good team. They’re really well coached, they’re going to give it everything they’ve got and we have to execute everything we’re going to do,” said coach Sams.
