The Disney magic continues with Bleeding Cool Editor-in-Chief, Kaitlyn Booth, as she talks to some of the Disney heads Lorcana. This simple Disney-themed collectible card game is releasing in August 2023 and exceeded expectations when it entered its fifth printing with Shimmering Skies last weekend. Standing on the ground of D23 is an experience in itself, and fortunately Ryan MillerBrand designers and Steve Warnerlead game designer and co-designer of Disney Lorcana, had a lot to say about the game’s incredible success. Among other things, they discussed the process of creating his art and were surprised themselves by what landed on their desks.

I’m sure you get asked all the time which map you like best in terms of game mechanics. I want to know which map you like best. Bebecause I am a fan of art.

Ryan: “Winnie the Pooh-Wizard Hunny, Winnie the Pooh-Wizard Hunny, Winnie the Pooh-Wizard Hunny!!”

Steve: “I had to choose a new (Shimmering Skies) Mufasa. Mufasa is beautiful.”

Ryan: “Hunny Wizard was such a beautiful thing because our process is for our art directors and narrators to come together and really write our art descriptions in just a few sentences. So I’m sure it was something like, you know, it’s Winnie the Pooh, but he’s a wizard and he uses hunny magic. And then we sent it to the artist (Alice Pisoni) and this artist just took no prisoners. I mean, it was ridiculous, and we got the image back, and it was so good! We thought, can we print it on another card? Because it’s on a regular card.

“At that point in the process, we ran out of time to do it, but we were able to put it on the playmat. So that was the thing that we didn’t originally plan on doing, to put that art on a playmat, but it was just so good, and it’s just one of the things that I love about this game is that every time the art is this, you know, every piece of art is amazing. We’re lucky that we get to see it early, and every time it’s just better and better, and you can just see the love in the art. You can see that the person who made this loves it.”
