Dispose of it safely: Brookings hosts a free household hazardous waste disposal event

BROOKINGS – Area residents will have the opportunity to safely dispose of household hazardous waste at a free event Saturday.

The City of Brookings Regional Landfill will host a household hazardous waste drop-off event from 8 a.m. to noon in the Dacotah Bank Center parking lot. The event is open to residents of Brookings, Deuel, Hamlin, Kingsbury, Lake and Moody counties, all of which are within the landfill’s service area.

According to Katie Stiegelmeier, operations and logistics manager for the city’s solid waste department, this is the fourth year in a row that this event has taken place.

“Last year we had more residents come than ever before, and we collected just over 17 tons, or 34,000 pounds, of household hazardous waste,” she said. “Our residents know how important it is to keep chemicals out of our landfills, and they appreciate having a way to conveniently and responsibly dispose of their household hazardous waste.”

Improper disposal of toxic, flammable or otherwise hazardous substances can pose a risk to people, animals, drinking water and the environment.

Although the event is free, Stiegelmeier said people are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items for the Brookings County Food Pantry. “The event provides a great opportunity for people to support the food bank,” she said. “Last year, people donated nearly 800 non-perishable food items and many donated cash as well. We appreciate their generosity.”
