DNR offers free off-roading on 4,000 miles of Michigan trails and 6 climbing areas

Later this month, Michigan will host a weekend of free off-roading on over 4,000 miles of state-designated trails.

The second and final ORV Free Weekend of 2024 is scheduled for August 17-18, offering riders the opportunity to cap off their summer with a free adventure.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources offers a free ORV weekend twice a year, in June and August.

During these weekends, residents and visitors can ride on designated routes and trails, as well as in the state’s six climbing areas, without purchasing an ORV license or trail permit. The entrance fee to Holly Oaks ORV Park in Oakland County is also waived.

“The Free ORV Weekend is a great opportunity to see, experience and try out Michigan’s off-road trails,” officials said.

DNR officials have previously stated that the Free ORV Weekend is designed to introduce people to the sport and the trails in the hopes that some of them will later consider purchasing licenses and trail permits.

According to the DNR, funds collected from ORV fees are reinvested in the trail system and support signage, construction of bridges and culverts, maintenance of trailhead facilities and other costs.

While permit and license requirements are waived during Free ORV Weekend, all other ORV rules and laws still apply. A Recreation Passport is still required where applicable, such as at hiking trails and climbing areas.
