Does Patriots QB Drake Maye feel “ready” to start in Week 1?

Despite several team errors in New England’s final preseason game against the Washington Commanders, Drake Maye gave the Patriots their best chances on offense.

Maye completed 13 of his 20 passes for 126 yards, including an 88-yard touchdown run capped by a pass to Patriots running back Kevin Harris.

The No. 3 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft has looked better and better in each of his preseason in-game appearances, and his head coach Jerod Mayo certainly left open the possibility for him to secure the starting spot ahead of veteran Jacoby Brissett.

If that’s the case, does the Patriots rookie feel ready to lead the offense in Week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals?

“I think I would feel ready,” Maye told reporters, according to a video provided by the team. “I’m ready for whatever this football team asks of me. I’m ready to go out there and try to help us beat the Bengals in Week 1.”

After Sunday’s game, Mayo alluded to the fact that Maye is currently “the second-best quarterback” on New England’s roster. With the Patriots beginning the regular season in less than two weeks, whether or not that assessment changes will dictate storylines leading up to Sept. 8.
