Doom + Doom 2 Bundle is a free upgrade if you already own one of the games

Highlights

  • Bethesda has surprisingly released a Doom + Doom 2 bundle and there’s a good chance you can get it for free.
  • If you already own any of the games, you should be able to upgrade to the package for free on the same platform.
  • The pack not only combines the two original games, but adds a whole new episode, 25 additional multiplayer maps, and much more.

More than 30 years after the original game was released, Doom is still one of the most influential games in video game history. Not only is the series still going strong, but its mark can be found throughout the industry. The originals also hold up and are still played so much that Bethesda continues to support them. Support might be an understatement in this particular case, as the Doom studio has surprisingly released a Doom + Doom 2 bundle with a ton of new content and upgrades, and if you like that, chances are you can get it for free.

The Doom + Doom 2 bundle is available now for multiple platforms. It brings together the first two games in the series for the ultimate Doom experience with a ton of new content and costs just $9.99. However, if you already own Doom or Doom 2 or your platform of choice, you should be able to download the new bundle as a free upgrade instead of paying $10. That’s a whole new game for free if you own just one of the two games in addition to all the new content that’s been added.

Someone has Doom running in Balatro now

Balatro has been added to the long list of video games that can officially run Doom.

Not only does the pack let you play these 25-year-old games at 120fps and in 4K if you have the hardware, but it also includes an entirely new episode. Legend Of Rust, a single-player episode created by developers at Nightdive, MachineGames, and ID Software, is part of the pack, as is the Sigil episode created by John Romero in 2019, for those of you who want to catch up. If that’s not enough new single-player stuff in a game that was released nearly three decades ago, there’s also a built-in mod browser that lets you modify the original games however you like.

$10 for all this ruin

The Doom Bundle’s co-op and deathmatch modes support up to 16 players. This feature was already included in previous versions of the game, but the bundle update has added 25 maps. This more than doubles the number of maps previously available, bringing the total to an incredible 43 deathmatch maps. As if all of that wasn’t enough – a reminder that you’re paying $9.99 for this at worst and getting it for free at best – the bundle also includes new music from the composer who put together the soundtrack for the Doom Eternal: The Ancient Gods DLC.

The free upgrade should apply to Doom or Doom 2 on all platforms the pack was released on. You just need to find it and make sure you’re looking for it on a platform that has one of the original games already installed if you want the upgrade for free.

I’d say this is an attempt by Bethesda to get more people playing Doom before Doom: The Dark Ages comes out in 2025, which I’m sure it will, because it never feels like there’s a time when people aren’t playing Doom. By the time The Dark Ages is released, it will have been five years since Doom Eternal, but at no point did it feel like the Doom hype had died down in that time. As for the bundle, any excuse to play two of the most iconic first-person shooters of all time is good, especially when it’s potentially free and has so many new features.
