Douglas County approves new gang violence coordinator at youth center

OMAHA, Nebraska (WOWT) – Ronald Smith is taking over as the new gang prevention coordinator at the Douglas County Youth Center.

Smith has a lot of experience helping youth on the streets. He was YouTurn’s street manager for seven years, sharing his personal experiences as a former gang member and working to help youth turn away from violence.

“I’m just passionate about it,” Smith said.

In his new position, Smith will be responsible for mentoring youth involved in gang and gun violence at the county’s youth center. He will do this by building personal relationships, educating the youth and setting them up for a better future.

“When they’re at their lowest, I can brighten their day and help them understand,” Smith said. “Whether that’s talking to them, playing with them, or taking care of their little siblings and bringing whatever they need to their family.”

Although his position is new, his work remains essentially the same.

“He was with YouTurn for many, many years and did a great job there and knows the community,” said Kim Hawkotte, assistant district director of youth services. “The key is it has to be someone that the youth trust, know and have a relationship with.”

While Smith will focus primarily on youth gangs and gun violence, Hawkotte said he has also been hired to help young people in need.

“Violence may have increased in many communities,” Hawkotte said. “We are actively trying to prevent that violence.”

Smith told 6 News he is not only willing to help the children, but also to be an example that life on the streets doesn’t have to last forever.

“We need to think together and think about how we can help these children before it’s too late,” Smith said.

Smith has been involved in the community for 20 years and will begin his new position on September 1.
