Drake announces that Rihanna collaboration “Too Good” is about Serena Williams

According to Drake, Serena Williams was the inspiration for one of his biggest hits.

Since the 37-year-old Toronto rapper released “100 Gigs” over the weekend — a website full of archival footage and unreleased songs — his fans have been scouring his massive content dump.

In a clip currently being shared on social media, Drake can be seen speaking to his mother, Sandi Graham, off-camera, during a studio session.

During their conversation, someone close to the Grammy winner plays his 2016 collaboration with Rihanna, “Too Good.” Mother and son then discuss the song.

Graham mentions that so far the Certified LoverboyHis music is “very light” and he says he doesn’t “go into it very deeply,” which contradicts Drake.

“No, I’m smoking a few joints, but this is more about me and Serena,” he says. “I guess so!” Graham interjects, seemingly unsurprised that her son is revealing his feelings in the song.

“I’m too good to you / I’m way too good to you / You take my love for granted / I just don’t understand,” the chorus repeats.

The two start talking over each other, and seconds later, “Too Good” starts playing again. They both pause, and the sound engineer turns the music off so they can continue talking.

“It’s funny because when I write songs about women, I also write songs for them, so I know what kind of song to write. If I’m talking about them, at least I’m doing them justice by writing them a song that they like,” Drake says in the video. “I know Serena very well and I know she’s going to hear it loud and clear but she’s not going to hate me for it because it’s lighthearted.”

Graham then asks a crucial question: “And she’s seeing someone else?”

“I don’t know, mom,” the rapper replies.

Although it’s unclear exactly when the video was taken, the 42-year-old tennis star is now married to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian. The couple married in November 2017 and are parents to daughters Alexis Olympia, 6, and Adira, who was born in August 2023.

In recent years, rumors have circulated that the hip-hop star and the former professional athlete were not only together, but were even engaged at one point.

However, in October 2015, a spokesperson for Williams denied these allegations, telling PEOPLE, “They are simply longtime friends.”

And while Rihanna – who gave birth to her first son RZA in May 2022 and her second son Riot with boyfriend A$AP Rocky 15 months later – may have sung on the song intended for Williams, the 36-year-old Fenty Beauty mogul is also said to have dated the rapper during an on-off relationship that spanned nearly 10 years.

The two artists have mentioned each other in several interviews and shortly after the release of “Too Good,” a source told PEOPLE, “Drake has always wanted to make it work with Rihanna. They are still dating. When they are in the same place, it will be more serious.”
