Rookie quarterback Drake Maye competed with veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett for the team’s starting quarterback position during the offseason, and it seems like he’s made some pretty big strides that have impressed his head coach.
During a recent press conference, New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo talked about the big change he has noticed in Drake Maye since he joined the team earlier this year.
“I think in the beginning he was trying to adjust and just be a good teammate,” Mayo told Scott Zolak during a Sunday night pregame appearance on 98.5 The Sports Hub, according to ESPN’s Mike Reiss. “Now he’s competing for the starting quarterback spot; he’s really stepped up his preparation and performance on the field.”
However, the fact that he has shown such progress in training does not mean that the team will hastily include him in the lineup.
“We’re going to stick to the (development) plan – it may not be a popular plan, but we’re doing what we think is right for the organization, not just in the short term but also in the long term,” Mayo said.
In any case, it sounds like the team liked what they saw from Maye.
