Drake reveals the inspiration behind “Hotline Bling,” but fans had someone else in mind

Over the last 12 hours or so, Drake has been a lot to talk about. Last night, the Canadian rapper uploaded “100gigs for your headtop,” a huge folder of old files as well as three new tracks. The titles are “It’s Up,” “Blue Green Red,” and “Housekeeping Knows,” and they include features from 21 Savage, Young Thug, and even Latto. As for the old folders, they include alternate covers for previous projects, studio clips, and more. Overall, the internet is mixed on this, as you’d expect from Drake by now. Currently, one of the “archaic” documents that is causing some discussion is a video of The Boy explaining how “Hotline Bling” came about.

“We were in bed together – we just got done fucking and her phone went off,” Drake began. “So I saved her name in my phone as ‘Hotline Bling.’ That’s always been her name on my phone.” He also joked that it was such a good name that he felt like it could have been his new stage name. “And when I looked at it today, I was like, ‘Hotline Bling’ is a dope name. That should be a stage name.” Additionally, he even spoke to the still-unidentified fling about her nickname being used as the title for one of his biggest songs right now. “Yo, your name, your nickname is such a good title for something.’ And then I just told her today and I was like, you know, I made a song called ‘Hotline Bling,’ that’s crazy.”

Fans want Drake to give DRAM the recognition he deserves for “Hotline Bling”

However, some people feel that someone else should be responsible for the song. In 2015, DRAM released “Cha Cha,” a track that was released a few months before “Hotline Bling.” The track would become his breakthrough and he felt there were some obvious similarities; so much so that he felt like Drake “stole” it. DRAM made his feelings known that same year in an interview with Billboard. He’s evolved, but some fans still don’t let Drizzy off the hook. “DRAM was the ‘inspiration,'” one user writes on X. “Drake, stay put,” another adds. Others defended Drake, saying the songs didn’t sound remotely similar.

What do you think about Drake’s inspiration for “Hotline Bling”? Do you think DRAM deserves the credit for creating this song, why or why not? Where do you rank this song compared to Drizzy’s biggest hits? What do you think about him releasing all these files the night before? We’d love to hear what you have to say, so leave your thoughts in the comments. Also, always be sure to HNHH for all the latest news on Drake and DRAM.
