drake has unearthed a few gems while rummaging through his musical archives, including a video that finally reveals which track he wrote about Serena Williams.

In one of the rapper’s 100 Gigs archive videos, fans noticed that he mentioned the 42-year-old Williams when talking about his 2016 hit “Too Good,” which featured a collaboration with Rihanna. (Drake’s 100 Gigs website was recently created to share old videos and unreleased songs.)

“No, I’ll take a few joints, but this is more about me and Serena,” Drake, now 37, told his mother. Sandy Grahamin the throwback video. “I suppose!” Graham replied, apparently implying that she was well aware of the musician’s relationship with the tennis player at the time.

In the song, Drake sings about a romance that he deserves better. “I’m too good to you / I’m way too good to you / You take my love for granted / I just don’t understand,” echoes the chorus.

From Taylor Swift and Jake Gyllenhaal to Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake, Us Weekly takes a look at the most famous song lyrics inspired by celebrity breakups. Swift, for her part, has always been open about writing about her exes. “If guys don’t want me to write bad songs about them, they shouldn’t do bad things,” says the (…)

While the song suggests that his relationship with Williams was rather one-sided, Drake claimed to his mother that she didn’t mind the lyrics.

“It’s funny because when I write songs about women, I also write songs for them. So I know what kind of song to write. If I’m talking about them, at least I’m doing them justice by writing them a song that they like,” Drake said in the throwback video.

He claimed: “I know Serena very well and I know she will hear it loud and clear but will not hate me for it because it is lighthearted.”

Graham takes a minute before asking her son, “And she’s seeing someone else?”, to which Drake admits, “I don’t know, Mom.”

It is not known when the conversation between Drake and his mother about Williams and his song “Too Good” took place, but the rapper and the tennis star were romantically involved in the summer of 2015.

Drake and Williams fueled relationship rumors in August when they were spotted kissing at an Ohio restaurant after the athlete’s Women’s Tennis Association tournament.

Williams claimed the duo was platonic, and a spokesman said People in October 2015: “They are simply long-time friends.”

Love and heartbreak. Throughout history, countless musicians have dedicated entire albums to their partners or ex-partners, creating some of the greatest works of all time. The Olympic tennis champion began dating Alexis Ohanian in 2015 after meeting at the same hotel in Rome in May of that year. The couple got engaged in December 2016 and married the following year in New Orleans. Williams and Ohanian, 41, have two daughters together: Alexis Olympia, 6, and Adira, 11 months.

Drake became a father in October 2017 and had son Adonis with his ex. Sophie Brussaux.

Although Williams’ relationship with Ohanian continued, Drake did not stop singing about her and her husband in his songs.

Drake criticized Ohanian in his 2022 song “Middle of the Ocean,” rapping, “Side note, Serena, your man is a groupie / He claims we ain’t got a problem, but nah, boo, it’s like you came for sushi.”

Ohanian apparently responded to the innuendo by sharing a list of his personal accomplishments on social media, noting that his “life changed” when he became “husband and daddy” to Williams and their daughters.

“It has made me 100x better as a man and a businessman,” Ohanian, the Reddit founder, wrote about X in November 2022. “In @serenawilliams I found a partner who I knew I would never outgrow and who would always motivate me to be better.”

He then countered the “groupie” description, writing, “The reason I always win is because I relentlessly strive to be the absolute best at everything I do – including being the best groupie for my wife and daughter.”

Williams supported her partner by responding to the tweet with a series of smiling heart emojis.
