Dricus du Plessis thanks Drake’s “curse” after epic UFC win ๐Ÿ˜‚

South African UFC champion Dricus du Plessis humorously thanked Drake for the infamous โ€œDrake curseโ€ after his victory over Israel Adesanya.

Global (19 August 2024) โ€“ South Africans are known for their ability to inject a sense of humor into any situation, and that sense of humor was on full display when South Africaโ€™s UFC sensation Dricus du Plessis took to social media to thank Canadian rapper Drake following his recent win over Israel Adesanya.

The highlight? The thanks were not for the direct support, but for the “Drake curse”, which according to some fans played a decisive role in Du Plessis’ victory.

Fresh from his triumphant win at UFC 305, where he defended his middleweight title in spectacular fashion, Du Plessis decided to have a little fun on social media.

In a light-hearted post, he wrote: “Thanks for the support @Drake ๐Ÿ˜‚.”

This was no ordinary thank you letter, however. Rather, it was a cheeky reference to the infamous โ€œDrake Curse,โ€ a phenomenon that has plagued athletes and teams for years.

For those who don’t know, the “Drake Curse” is a common superstition in the sports world. The curse states that any athlete or team publicly endorsed by Drake is doomed to failure. Over the years, the rapper has inadvertently cast a spell on a number of high-profile sporting events, with his endorsements seemingly resulting in surprise defeats and disappointing performances.

In this case, Drake had bet a whopping $450,000 (over R8 million) on Israel Adesanya to reclaim his middleweight title from Du Plessis. The South African powerhouse, however, had other plans and executed a masterful rear-naked choke in the fourth round to secure his victory. Fans were quick to point out Drake’s involvement on social media, and Du Plessis didn’t miss the opportunity to get in on the joke.

South Africa is not only celebrating a sporting victory, but also revelling in the good-natured spirit of its champions. Du Plessis’s joking thank you tweet is a reminder that whether you win or lose, it’s important to keep things lighthearted and enjoy every moment – especially when the whole world is watching.

So, cheers to Dricus Du Plessis, who not only defended his title but also conquered the internet with his wit and charm. And as for Drake, maybe next time he’ll think twice before making another bet. Or maybe, just maybe, he’ll keep giving us all a reason to laugh.
