Drivers should avoid buying a particular car brand due to the high repair costs

A mechanic has revealed the worst car drivers can buy because they have to make “frequent visits” to the garage and face huge running costs.

The cost of living crisis has hit motorists hard in recent years, with car insurance premiums, fuel prices and vehicle tax rates all rising dramatically.

Since many people want to save money, a mechanic advises avoiding certain cars as they may require more money to keep them roadworthy.

Reaz, a professional mechanic with 17 years’ experience and garage owner, advises motorists to avoid common models as they can have problems that can cost hundreds or even thousands of pounds to repair.

The expert stressed that the number of workshop visits for Land Rover and Range Rover models is particularly high because some drivers have problems with the sensors.

He added that for drivers who want larger cars, the Volvo X90 T8 R Design Pro or any petrol hybrid vehicle from Toyota or Lexus would be a better fit.

They have often been praised for their reliability, build quality and family-friendly design, which has led to both brands being among the most popular around the world.

Reaz said: “These models rarely visit a garage other than for routine maintenance, making them the first choice for savvy car buyers who value longevity and minimal repair costs.”

Range Rover and Land Rover can pose another problem for drivers, namely the cost of car insurance for these vehicles.

Some motorists reported receiving quotes of up to £10,000, prompting Jaguar Land Rover to introduce its own tailored insurance offers for customers who find it difficult to obtain cover from major insurers.

This comes amid a rise in car thefts of larger SUV vehicles in recent months, with JLR offering £150 monthly insurance premium for up to three years on the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport models.

Drivers may also experience problems with more modern vehicles, as these require specialist repairs due to the amount of complex electronics they contain. For older vehicles, however, replacement parts are more readily available.

This has led to drivers being encouraged to take their vehicle to the workshop to ensure that the electronics are serviced safely, thus avoiding further visits to the workshop.

The mechanic stressed that important systems in the vehicle would need to be recalibrated or properly formatted by a professional, with certain things being outside the scope of most drivers.

For example, the advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) need to be recalibrated after a collision, and this task is carried out by a specialist.

Reaz added: “If you notice delays when engaging your car’s clutch or performing an advanced driver function, your ADAS system may be faulty and needs to be recalibrated by a repair shop or automotive expert.”
